The European Research Council (ERC) provides frontier research funding through Horizon Europe across all scientific disciplines. This eligibility calculator evaluates your certified PhD defence date against the snapshot reference of 1 January of the call year — the rule ERC has used since 2023.
Important — windows widen substantially for the 2027 calls onwards. Announced 16 April 2026 in the new ERC Work Programme, the eligibility windows are now:
- Starting Grant — 2026 calls: 2–7 years post-PhD; 2027+ calls: 0–10 years (immediately after PhD up to ten years past).
- Consolidator Grant — 2026 calls: 7–12 years post-PhD; 2027+ calls: 5–15 years.
- Advanced Grant — no time-since-PhD limit; evaluators look at the past ten years of track record.
- Synergy Grant — at least one PI must be 2+ years post-PhD; the 2027 call is rescheduled to February 2027.
How the ERC Calculator Works
Our ERC grant eligibility calculator automatically computes your eligibility window based on your PhD defense date and accounts for qualifying career breaks. The European Research Council recognizes several types of career interruptions that extend your eligibility period:
- Maternity leave: 18 months flat per child (or actual documented duration if longer). Children born before or after the PhD count.
- Paternity leave: documented duration per child (no flat rate).
- Parental leave: documented duration per child — named explicitly as a ground in the 2026 work programme.
- Clinical training: documented training after PhD defence, capped at 4 years (1460 days).
- Gender-based or other violence: new explicit ground in the 2026 work programme — documented duration applied 1:1.
- Other documented breaks: long-term illness, national / military service, asylum-related interruptions, major natural disasters.
Why ERC Eligibility Timing Matters
Strategic timing is crucial for ERC applications. Applying too early or too late can significantly reduce your success probability. The ERC Starting Grant targets researchers establishing independent careers, while the ERC Consolidator Grant supports those consolidating their research teams and programs. Use this calculator to identify your optimal application window and maximize your chances of securing Horizon Europe funding.
ERC Grant Schemes Explained
ERC Starting Grant
The ERC Starting Grant supports early-career researchers establishing their first independent research team — 2–7 years post-PhD for the 2026 calls and 0–10 years for the 2027 calls onwards. Grants provide up to 1.5 million euros over 5 years for groundbreaking projects in any research field. For detailed eligibility rules and recent changes, see our guide on ERC Starting Grant eligibility requirements.
ERC Consolidator Grant
The ERC Consolidator Grant targets mid-career researchers consolidating their independent research teams — 7–12 years post-PhD for the 2026 calls and 5–15 years for the 2027 calls onwards. With funding up to 2 million euros over 5 years, this grant supports researchers with promising track records to establish themselves as independent research leaders in their fields.
ERC Advanced Grant
The ERC Advanced Grant supports established research leaders with exceptional track records over the past 10 years. This scheme has no time-since-PhD restrictions and provides up to 2.5 million euros over 5 years for frontier research projects that push the boundaries of scientific knowledge.

What changed for the 2027 calls?
On 16 April 2026 ERC announced a substantially restructured 2027 work programme with three notable changes for applicants:
- Wider eligibility windows. Starting Grant expands from 2–7 years to 0–10 years post-PhD; Consolidator from 7–12 to 5–15 years.
- Career caps. Each researcher may hold only one Starting Grant and one Consolidator Grant in their entire career.
- Score-based resubmission bars. A C score at Step 1 in any of 2024, 2025, or 2026 blocks 2027 main-track applications. A B score at Step 1 in 2025 or 2026 also blocks the 2027 calls.
Additionally: only one proposal can be under evaluation at any time (Proof of Concept excepted), one submission per Work Programme 2027, and Synergy Grants 2027 are rescheduled to February 2027. Advanced Grant 2026 applicants are blocked from Synergy 2027. Sources: ERC announcement, 16 April 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply to multiple ERC schemes?
Researchers can only hold one ERC grant at a time, but you can apply to the scheme matching your career stage. If you're in the overlap period between ERC Starting Grant and Consolidator Grant eligibility (exactly 7 years post-PhD), you must choose one scheme based on your career trajectory and research independence.
How do career breaks affect ERC eligibility?
The European Research Council allows extensions for documented career breaks. Maternity leave grants 18 months flat per child or actual documented duration if longer; paternity and parental leave are extended by their documented duration. Clinical training is capped at 4 years. Long-term illness, national/military service, asylum-related interruptions, natural disasters, and gender-based or other violence (a new explicit ground in the 2026 work programme) all extend the window by their documented duration. Calculations follow the official ERC eligibility criteria.
What if I'm between two ERC grant schemes?
If you're at the boundary between schemes (e.g., exactly 7 years post-PhD for Starting vs Consolidator), consider your research independence level, team size, and publication record. Generally, more established researchers benefit from the higher funding ceiling and prestige of Consolidator Grants, while those still building independence may fare better with Starting Grants. Our article on ERC Starting vs Consolidator Grant timing provides strategic guidance for this decision.
